My layout for the 2010 Heartland of America Garden Railroad Show (HAGRS - www.hagrs.com ) held in Overland Park, KS.

Deployed just over 2000ft of track in 10 loops. (Mixture of brass, Stainless Steel, AML and Aristocraft straights with Aristocraft curves, split-jaw direct-to-rail clamps at all joints)

The following engines made their appearance: (All 16 engines are MTH DCS Protosound 2 equipped)

  • 3 - MTH Big Boys
  • 3 - MTH Triplexes
  • 1 - USA Trains Hudson
  • 1 - MTH Hudson
  • 1 - MTH Challenger
  • 5 - Aristocraft Dash-9s
  • 1 - MTH GS-4 (American Freedom Train)
  • 1 - MTH GS-4 (Daylight)

Rolling stock:

  • 120 - Bachmann coal hoppers (in two - 60 car coal trains)
  • 40 - USA trains Intermodal cars
  • 10 - MTH Passenger cars - (American Freedom Train)
  • 10 - MTH Passenger cars - (Daylight)
  • 21 - Aristocraft Heavyweights

Photos of the setup:

During the show:

The entire 8 loops of 16 powered engines ran on only 16amps (@24v) of power. Protosound equipped engines (DCS) are very power efficient.

John Dula's real diesel control stand setup used to run engine.  Had wireless video camera mounted on engine running on the inside loop (track #10) that transmitted back to the computer screen to give the effect of actually operating a diesel locomotive.
